Part of our Energy Management Service scope is to work with Schools to identify not only the tools but also the behaviours to reduce the cost of energy usage and wastage caused by the ageing School estate in England and Wales.
Implementing Solar Photovoltaics has significant benefits for Schools and Academies:
Reduce your electricity bills and reduce your reliance on rising grid costs. Daylight is a free resource so every day you will be reducing your electricity costs.
Get paid for the electricity you generate. There are subsidies that can pay you for the electricity you generate, even if you use it to encourage the move to renewable
Sell electricity back to the grid. If your system is producing more electricity than you need, you can sell the surplus back to the grid through the Feed-in Tariff scheme.
Cut your carbon footprint. Solar electricity is green renewable energy and doesn't release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. A typical home solar PV system could save over a tonne and a half of carbon dioxide per year – that's more than 30 tonnes over its lifetime.

Biomass boilers replace existing gas and oil fired boilers and burn environmentally friendly and efficient wood chip pellets stored in a hopper. In most cases biomass boilers can be a straight swap for existing oil or gas boilers but the technology is not right for every site.
At the moment there is the Renewable Heat Incentive, a government subsidy, that can cover the cost of purchasing a Biomass Boiler through an operating rental meaning no capital spend, an attractive option if you have old and inefficient boilers.
Our Framework partners also can provide Energy Centres that house biomass boilers and that can be installed very easily onsite and plumbed into your existing systems.
There are many Schools and Academies with poor lighting in classrooms and other teaching areas that do not meet the latest CIBSE guidelines. Classrooms will be dull or 'patchy' in light quality and this negatively impacts teaching and learning.
An LED lighting upgrade is a potential solution to these issues and can be funded from the electricity savings they generate if designed and installed properly. Benefits of LED lighting include:
Quality of Light - Increasing the consistency and quality of lighting in classrooms with 'cool white' meeting CIBSE guidelines
Efficiency - LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than traditional halogen lighting making a significant impact on reducing electricity costs
Replacement - With the standard LED light bulbs now having a 10 year warranty and a lifespan of up to 100,000hrs there is a significant saving in not having to replace bulbs and tubes on a regular basis
Maintenance - Reduction in your maintenance costs by not having to replace bulbs as often
New LED Lighting can be funded by our Social Enterprise fund and not only could you replace all of your lighting but you could also generate a surplus to be invested back into teaching and learning.
IT equipment is one of the highest users of electricity in a building after lighting and it is important to address. How many times have you walked around a School at the end of the day and see PCs, Screens and Projectors left on.
